Robotel: Japan hotel staffed by robot dinosaurs Robotel: Japan hotel staffed by robot dinosaurs Urayasu, Japan | Mon, September 3, 2018 | 06:02 pm A robot dinosaur wearing a bellboy hats welcomes guests from the front desk at the Henn-na Hotel in Urayasu, suburban Tokyo on August 31, 2018. (AFP/Kazuhiro Nogi) The reception at the Henn na Hotel east of Tokyo is eerily quiet until customers approach the robot dinosaurs manning the front desk. Their sensors detect the motion and they bellow "Welcome." It might be about the weirdest check-in experience possible, but that's exactly the point at the Henn na (whose name means 'weird') chain, which bills itself as offering the world's first hotels staffed by robots. The front desk staff are a pair of giant dinosaurs that look like cast members of the Jurassic Park movies, except for the tiny bellboy hats perched on their heads. The robo-dinos process check-ins through a tablet system that also allows customers to choose which language -- Japanese, English, Chinese or Korean -- they want to use to communicate with the multilingual robots. The effect is bizarre, with the large dinosaurs gesticulating with their long arms and issuing tinny set phrases. Yukio Nagai, manager at the Henn na Hotel Maihama Tokyo Bay, admits some customers find it slightly unnerving. "We haven't quite figured out when exactly the guests want to be served by people, and when it's okay to be served by robots," he told AFP. But for other guests the novelty is the charm: each room is staffed with mini-robots that look a bit like spherical Star Wars droid BB-8, and help guests with everything from changing channels to playing music.

This Japanese Retreat Uses Samurai Secrets to Reset Your Mind | Travel + Leisure

They survived living in the forests by hiking for days, eating whatever they found, and continuously pushing their mental and physical strength.  During the five-day Yamabushido program created by Megurun Inc., a Shonai-based company, non-Japanese speakers are invited to train with a 13th-generation, 70-plus-year-old Yamabushi, Master Hoshino and his disciples, while staying at his pilgrimage house in Yamagata prefecture. The area is surrounded by mountains and the Sea of Japan, and is known for the color-changing lake, Goshiki Numa , the temple of Yama-dera carved into a mountain, and the illusion of snow monsters formed by snow-covered trees. The consent form comes with fair warning: “Yamabushi undertake training in harsh alpine conditions, walking over 10 miles per day. Your Yamabushidō experience will likely include hiking during the night, meditating under icy cold waterfalls, jumping over fire, and being enclosed in a smoky room.” Still, nothing can prepare you for the surreal experience of discovering the inner strength you never knew you had.  Each morning, we woke up at the crack of dawn to the sound of a shell horn, dressed ourselves in layers of thick white cotton known as shiroshōzoku to symbolize the walking dead, and quickly gulped down a bowl of miso soup, steamed rice, and pickle. By 5 a.m., we'd head out in white canvas shoes with wooden sticks in our hands to hike all day through the three sacred mountains of Dewa Senzan. Along the way, we would chant and bow in front of shrines, practicing Shugendō, a belief system that incorporates pre-Buddhist mountain worship, Shinto, Taoism, and esoteric Buddhism. Even when it rained through the dense cedar forest, we took brisk steps onto thousands of slippery stone steps, focusing inward, and silencing our minds. The only word we were permitted to speak was “uketamō" — "I humbly accept with an open heart" — in response to commands from our master. We had to be up for any challenge, no questions asked. In the evening, we practiced Zen meditation, chanted the Lotus Sutra, and allowed the smoke of burning incense to fill our lungs and eyes.

The Best Travel Tips For Your Dream Vacation

When it comes to traveling, there is a lot to plan out. Preparing for a big trip can be a lot of fun. This piece offers lots of great ideas for making your travel plans wisely and without a great deal of stress.

Leave most of your items of value at home. Too many items often burden travelers with additional responsibility, which increases the possibility of these items getting lost or stolen.

Once you have picked a destination, learn everything you can about the area. Find a map of where you will be visiting and study it for locations you plan to visit. If you learn the area, you will have an easier time while you travel.

While planning for your vacation, be flexible with your destination choice. You can have fun making a routine when revisiting, but maintaining variety can make it more relaxing and memorable. Your choice of destination can often be the money saver when you're on a tight budget.

Even if you are taking a long flight, bring your own comfort supplies and don't rely on airline personnel to provide them. Pack your headphones, a blanket and even a pillow if you feel like you will use them. It is also wise to bring some snacks, so you will have food that you enjoy eating if you are hungry.

Join a price watcher for travel. This is offered by several websites and lets you input your most traveled destinations, and it keeps an eye on them for you. When the hotel or airfare price drops by the amount chosen, the site ends you an email alert. You will not have to worry about checking the rates daily.

Cash in traveler's checks before shopping or eating. Many places do, of course, accept these checks, but they are really a pain to deal with. You may find yourself getting shorted if you use them, so play it safe and get the local currency before you spend.

When you plan to stay in a hotel, bring some candles along. It can help your room smell better. The light from it creates a romantic and relaxing atmosphere. It could even relax you enough to help ease you into sleep. There are several companies that manufacture miniature scented candles that are easy to pack.

Find the service stops on your journey while driving. When you're on road trips, often you may find long stretches of road that don't offer much car service if you need it. Try to map out these stops ahead of time. Keep the number for those service stations with you as you travel.

Take an extra passport picture along as you travel abroad. If you manage to lose your passport, you will lose time trying to replace it. Carrying a photo with you can speed the process up. Also, keep any documentation you will need.

If you sleep lightly, pack earplugs. Some hotel walls are ridiculously thin. A good pair of earplugs (or multiple pairs of disposable earplugs) can block out the extra noise and allow you to get a good night's sleep.

Family or friends should have a full itinerary for your trip. Make a list of all people and places you expect to visit, including contact information for them. Also leave a copy of your passport identification page and your flight and ticket information.

Always have a contact case handy when you are out and about. These items are great for carrying gels and lotions if you only need a small amount of the product.

Travel should be fun! Use what you have learned from the information above, and have fun from the beginning of your trip to the end.
